Hello. I’m Eirwen, a soon-to-be pupil barrister from London.
I am writing this first blog post from Ghana, having flown in last night
through a lightning storm. I am 28 years old and I am nearing the end of my
third “gap year”.
This blog has several raisons d’être. It is primarily to
document the experiences I will have here in Ghana over the next six weeks,
gratefully supported by the Commonwealth in England Barristers’ Association
(CEBA) – more on that later. Additionally, this blog will address the
often-asked question, “How do you do it? How do you manage to find the
time/money/energy to go away for months at a time every two years?”. In answering this latter question, I will
also hopefully provide advice to other law students/junior lawyers on
opportunities available for them to take advantage of around the world, and
observations on my various experiences of legal systems and cultures I have
been exposed to. Of interest to general readers, I’ll populate the blog with
recommendations and tips on where to eat, where to stay, what to visit, for the
various countries I have been to (though do note that my experiences have
invariably been at the budget/backpacker end of the luxury spectrum).
So, in summary this blog is just another travel blog, but
curiously aimed at law students, junior lawyers, or travellers more generally
interested in the law. Niche, I know.
